Week seven mainly consisted of progress checks and wrapping up some of the remaining projects since next week marks the end of my internship with Metro Government. My supervisor and other team members who have been on vacation returned. A meeting was scheduled to discuss my accomplished tasks as well as what remains incomplete, which will be returned to the department when I leave. Helping improve Bike Louisville has been one of my most enjoyable projects, especially since the city news still runs stories on bike confusion. There always seems to be room for improvement so the public can be better educated. As one of the last tasks for this project, I was asked to gather information on current bike shop locations in Louisville to update them to be displayed on the interactive map. After contacting Wufoo support, I learned that the payment options are somewhat limited and may not meet the desires of the Codes and Regulations department. The incomplete permit forms will have to be finished by the department since they now face looking at other form building options, which I no longer have time to work on before the internship ends.
Midweek, I was asked to attend another city communications meeting in the mayor’s office. As I discussed in a previous entry, a representative from each department shows up with a list of their current or upcoming events to discuss. It was interesting to hear about future plans that involve Metro IT to install GPS systems within 40% of city transportation including snow machines by this winter. This will enable the city to see them on their routes and help change driver behavior to reduce idle time. Going to several of these types of meetings shows the importance of communication and how it can tie in with different forms of technology.
The end of the week revolved around another task with Louisville’s open data portal. Currently, the application development group is evaluating the data set listings and their relevance. I must assess each listing and identify if it is tagged with the correct categories. Some are known to have incorrect tags from the time they have been uploaded and I will continue to help correctly sort them throughout next week. Sorting and classifying data puts to use some of my learned skills from previous ICT classes.
